Executive Women International

Every year, Executive Women International selects a different Calgary based non-profit organization that supports families and children and dedicates its fundraising efforts to that organization. For 2012, EWI selected the Highbanks Society. Highbanks provides subsidized housing and wrap-around support services for young parents in Calgary. Their main objective is to help teen moms develop into fine young women by assisting them in completing their high school, college, or university education. It also provides much-needed support and mentoring in life skills such as budgeting, healthy cooking, efficient shopping and general parenting.

Highbanks, through its Executive Director, Cecilia de la Rocha, has identified an area that requires increased focus: psychological counseling and support. Some of these young moms are exiting abusive relationships and do not have the support of their families. Others struggle with being a good parent or simply have not matured into self-confident young women yet. Though very generous counselors have provided the Society with reduced hourly rates, Highbanks is finding itself in a situation where their operating budget is not high enough to meet the demands for this service. Ms. de la Rocha estimates that approximately $30,000 per year is needed to meet this need.
