Vogel LLP Associate Andy Hayher New Interim Head Coach Of Sait’s Men’s Volleyball

Andy Hayher and Jeff Smith will be leading a very strong SAIT Trojans men’s volleyball team into battle during the 2012-13 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season, following the resignation of veteran head coach Ryan Marsden for personal reasons.

Hayher, an Associate at Vogel LLP’s Calgary law firm, is a former provincial and national silver medal winner during his playing days with the Trojans, is a longtime assistant with the squad and will take over as interim head coach. Smith, a second-year SAIT assistant with extensive experience at the collegiate and provincial level, assumes the title of associate head coach.

“Coach Marsden laid a strong foundation for our program, and our job is to keep moving in the right direction,” says Hayher. “We have a great group of student athletes in our program, and I am extremely excited to see what we can achieve.”

Hayher was a Trojans starter during the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons, helping the team to ACAC and Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) silver in 2000-01. He was an assistant to Lorry Ingram in 2001-02 (ACAC silver, CCAA silver) and ’02-03 (ACAC silver), and has spent the past four winters as Marsden’s assistant – including the 2009-10 campaign, which saw the Men of Troy claim their first ACAC crown in 25 years, and go on to earn national silver.

The Trojans began the pre-season last weekend with four straight wins over ACAC opponents in Edmonton. They’ll be hosting their own eight-team, ACAC pre-season tournament at the SAIT Campus Centre from Oct. 12 to 14, and will begin the regular season on Friday, Nov. 2 against the Olds College Broncos.
