Strategies For Coping: Play Therapy

Strategies For Coping: Play TherapyRecently we attended a Provincial Court Judicial Dispute Resolution (JDR) before our client’s scheduled trial on mobility. At the JDR, concerns arose regarding the child’s adjustment to the parents’ separation, as the child was quite young (4 years) and handling the transition very poorly. Because of the child’s young age, the Judge at this JDR recommended that the child attend Play Therapy, as opposed to direct counseling.

Play Therapy

Play Therapy is a form of counseling that uses play to allow children to express their experiences and feelings. Through Play Therapy, the children then use this expression to work through their issues, build their confidence and grow. Play therapists are specifically trained to observe and facilitate the therapy process, often with the goal of strengthening the child’s coping strategies.

Play Therapy is advised as ideal for children aged 3 to 12, as younger children often communicate through play and it is considered to be essential to child development. Ideally, parents are also invited to be involved in the Play Therapy process, allowing them to be integrated in a range between minimal and significant roles.
